I can feel the lower parts of my teeth (covered by gums) are my gums damaged?

I have only been doing dipping tobacco for a month, and I like pack large amounts of dip in my lower lip, and later clean it out thoroughly. Now, when I clench my lower lip or move it around I can feel the lower parts of my teeth (the part covered by my gums) and they feel hard, I could not feel them before. I am worried that my gums are damaged, because this is symptom is new to me. Is this symptom caused by receded or damaged gums?
