What is the answer for why self preservation and procreation encoded in DNA?

Self preservation and reproduction had to be present in the first single cell life form. Why? there was no logic involved, the life form should have died, no reason to evolve, it could not perceive it's environment or care if it survived without being programed by it's DNA. Without intelligence why would this happen? It seems that it is a logical progression. Why? Any ideas to explain this will help in an essay I am writing.
