The Bible (Genesis 1:26-27) teaches that humans are made in the image of God where other living things do not enjoy that status. Some other religions say that sanctity of life includes animals as well and Jainism includes all living things including insects.

The sanctity of life doctrine is most often used by Christians to oppose issues like abortion, contraception and assisted suicide. The abortion argument also hinges around the question of, at what point in the reproductive process is a fetus no longer part of a woman's body and a human life of it's own?
