Is it illegal to have cameras in bathrooms?

So I went to take a leak and as soon as I close the stall door I see this sign that says "smile your on camera!" I was like what the hell?! There were little notes written around it saying stuff like "hope you enjoyed watching me shit!" I was so embarrassed I just held it in for the remainder of the day. The sign was for real, because I did see some cameras. Sorry if T.M.I.

I think it is legal if it isn't in the stall.
Speaking of cameras, there is a Burlington Coat Factory story in my town that has little signs on the dressing room mirrors that say 'you may be observed by security personnel of the same sex while in the dressing room'. It is creepy and really irritating, ever time I go there I give their stupid two-way-mirror the bird while changing.

The answer would depend on the laws where the cameras are located. It would seem to me the business owners would be leaving themselves open for a privacy lawsuit. It could be that they have suffered vandalism and the cameras are fake, just used to prevent damage.

Idk, but I'm NEVER going back there again. It was in California, and the cameras were above a changing table one pointing at the door, and one at the row of stalls.
