Toilet tank overflow

my tank is overflowing up to the point of the handle and then leaking out of the handle,,, its not "running" ... no water coming out of fill hose... it takes some time to get to this point, at least a few hours... any idea what the problem could be?

It will have a float, either a round bulb on a metal rod or a circular object that rides up and down on a hollow plastic column. The incoming water is supposed to turn off when the float reaches the top. Your float is either set so it is coming up too high and not completely cutting the water off or, the cutoff valve in the float is defective and leaking. You can buy a replacement float at a hardware store if it is defective.
