How do I explain my employment status when dating and to a potential employer?

I got a 2.1 at university and went on to do a masters. For my masters project I got a distinction and really enjoyed my masters so tried for a career in research. Years later after temping and fitting in two years of voluntary work in the area of research still no research job. I decided to do some course in statistics and I was awful. As I am no good at anything but basic statistics I can't get a job in research and because I spent time volunteering and temping I don't have solid experience of any one sector. At the moment I am finding work through friends and family and trying to start up my own business. I am terrified of interviews because I am scared people will ask me about my experience. I am also terrified of dating because I feel a guy will think less of me.
