Is sitting for over 4 hours daily bad, or is sitting for seperate periods of over 4 hours bad?

I have recently read that sitting down for more than four hours a day is bad for your health. However all the articles I have read do not clearly indicate if it is sitting down for a accumulate time of four hours a day that is bad for your health; or if it is simply sitting down for individual periods of more than four hours, that is bad for your health. So I'm wondering, which is it? An answer isn't urgent but I'd like to know so that I can make healthy lifestyle changes. :)
