What should I do to pursuit a design career

I graduated from product design BA and MA but couldn't find a job in the related field, as the education was more about developing creative skills then meeting up industrial request. I got a job in print design, but as I am not a professional graphic designer, I have difficulty in expending my clients. I am thinking about to change job next year, but I really don't know in which particular area I should focus on...If continue being a graphic designer I may need to learn more software, if to do product design or related field I don't know what job would pick me...

Please give me some advices.
