Will I really add to the world if I do what I love?

if I do what I love to do which in my case is travelling and hopefully teaching in different countries and no go after the nobel pursuits like medicine. law or the army will I really add something to the world? If I do that then I might not get the respect an army officer (just like my father) gets or have stars on my shoulders or understand what loyalty is, I might not understand what it s like to be in the face of death or not experience the joy of knowing that 'im waking up so that my countrymen can sleep'. I really want to joint the army because I think that it'll satisfy me and I will be a part of an organisation which believes in 'freedom is not for free' but then I might not be able to travel around the world, soak in whats out there, be free, test myself to the limits, see different cultures, meet new people, bring a sense of adventure in my life and write about it all. But I really want to make a positive difference in people's lives. Im just a little confused.

We are all obligated to do our best to leave the Earth in a better condition than we found it. There are millions of ways we can contribute. The difficult issue, as you seem to understand, is which is the best for you to accomplish that. Choosing a military career is one of the tougher choices because military forces are the muscle behind political organizations and members of the military don't get to choose which political movement they support.

If you trust your political leadership to always do the right thing, a military career would be good for you. If you think you might find yourself having to fight for a cause you don't believe in, I would look for another line of work to fill my dreams.
