Discuss the significance of free and bound hormone measurement.

What does this mean? I am confused as to the difference in free and bound hormones.

About 95% of hormones are bound in proteins and 5% are unbound or "free." Free hormone levels can be tested in saliva. Bound levels must be tested in the blood. The significance is when reviewing test results, it's necessary to understand what test was used because saliva (free) tests return much lower numbers. Misunderstanding the type test could result in over dosing or under dosing hormone replacement therapy.
