Encephalopathy and intelligence deficits in children due to which metal?

In 1897 a team investigated the incident of metallic poisoning in children, they became ill after changing their residence, The same happened in the patients who recovered in hospitals suffered a relapse 3-12 months following their discharge. it was then observed that the source of disease was originated on the railings and walls of homes of the affected children. Similarly in 1934 it was found that licking raindrops from the railings of colonial verandas also poisoned the children. The children suffered from acute or severe encephalopathy and intelligence deficits. what is the source of disease? and y it is more prevalent in children rather than adults? plz help. answer this.
