Why was I really laid off from my job?

Question For any regional managers or Managers in retail: Tell me what you all think of this and get back to me if you have an answer. I worked at Dollar General for only a month and got laid off because they couldn’t afford my paycheck. Then about 2 weeks later they hire a bunch of new cashiers. This was in 2004. Then recently, I tried to get a job there and they told me they couldn’t hire me because of a policy that says they can’t hire former employees. I wasn’t fired…I was just laid off. When I was working there, they told me I was doing an excellent job for them. Then to make things too awkward, I tried to get an employment background check for dollar general that was offered at my county court house. The funny thing is they told me they couldn’t give me my employment background check for Dollar General only. What do you all think is really going on here?
