Driving in California

I have had my learners permit for a while now. I was wondering if it would be legal to drive with my parents while carrying the permit.

I was told that I need 1 lesson with a licensed instructor before I can drive with my parents.

Also, what are the restrictions to driving with a learners permit in California?
