Why does my ipod 1st gen shut off when it's idle?

when my ipod is on and just sitting idle(not playing music) it shuts itself off and wont turn back on unless you plug it in the wall or computer.The battery is fine and I've reset the ipod on itunes.Also held the home button and power button at same time.Any ideas on how to fix
