Which is better a small room for a dog or a crate

Placed dog in a small room in our house .. with door to go out and his daily needs,bowl,toys, during the day..and night when we sleep.
Dog started biting door and gradually chewed his way out..
I was just amazed with this.. He was very pleased with himself and just walked around house,us waggin his tail...
So, I decided that Ive had enough of this and placed him in his original crate... and he is not pleased,but I am so tired of being out smarted by this little guy..

I know how you feel! We have 3 Yorkies who may as well be rocket scientists.

Our dogs have a small room in our house with a doggie door in an exterior door that opens to a courtyard in our house where they can do their business when they want. They bark like you wouldn't believe when the interior door is closed... and they HATE crates, so we had to figure out a way to keep them in bounds *and* keep the door open.

We installed an indoor radio fence that outlines where they are and are not allowed in the house. Ours has settings to outline different boundaries for daytime when we're at work/school, when we're home, when we have company, nighttime, etc. That's worked out pretty well for us. I'm not really sure how it works... my son set it up when he was 9.
