I want to make scarf but I m confused

i m new knitter..i mgoing to make scarf...the pattern says to use 6mm needle I have 5mm needle I cant buy a new one bcz of some reasons...the pattern guage is 3.5sts into one inch..how will I adjust my guage according to ma needle size and pattern...thanx
