Should I get a kanji tattoo (not typical situation)?

So I'm a long time student of the Japanese language and consider myself to be pretty proficient in the language (planning on taking JLPT Level 1 possibly next year if I have time).

If I were to get a tattoo it would be the idiom 登龍門 which is pronounce touryuumon. It literally says "climbing the dragons gate" but metaphorically refers to overcoming adversity and achieving success.


So since I speak and read the language quite well and have a personal connection to it I feel that a tattoo would be cool.

However, I know there is a stigma against getting kanji tattoos. A lot of people who get them don't know a single word of chinese/japanese and don't care to verify if their tattoos is written correctly or means what they think it means.

So I'm afraid that if I went ahead and got this tattoo as a white guy, people would instantly assume that I'm one of those ignorant people. It wouldn't be fun to have people secretly doubting your intelligence wherever you go and then having to explain/defend yourself.

So, thoughts?

Rather than go through all of that, why not just get a tattoo that says, "I speak Japanese?" :-)
