Why appendix in human beings has not been removed evolutionally by nature?

Appendix is not functional in human beings.According to "Darwinism'' those parts of bodym, which are not used by the organism, are removed.But appendix has not been removed evolutionally by nature.what's the reason?

It took millions of years to develop the ability to do many of the things we take for granted today. Evolution is a very slow process.
