I don't know that you ever "completely recover" from an addiction to the point that you can be around people that use the drug and it doesn't bother you. Drugs are not only physically addictive, it's an addictive lifestyle. The secret is to find a new lifestyle and social circle with goals that are more important to you than your life in the past. If you aren't faced with those temptations, your chances of a normal life are infinitely greater.

Depends what drug you are talking about, and also depends on the individual person.

First off quitting any addiction is a lifestyle change. which means changing everything from your attitude to the way you wake up in the morning to the people you surround yourself with. it is lonely and hard but it is soooo worth it. I have been clean for almost 5 yrs. and it is tough but with the support of my accountability team and my sponsor I can do it. For me personally it took a complete giving of my life to God. and a relationship with Christ. through a program called Celebrate Recovery. I noticed that I was like an onion in the sense that when I got rid of the addiction I started peeling back the layers and more issues that I was covering up with the drugs came out for me to deal with. I am just answering this question because it sounded like you needed someone with some experience with addiction to answer you. I hope this helps. this is just what I noticed has works for me. Congratulations on your recovery.
