In a nutshell. Web site owners use the /robots.txt file to give instructions about their site to web robots; this is called The Robots Exclusion Protocol. The "User-agent: *" means this section applies to all robots. The "Disallow: /" tells the robot that it should not visit any pages on the site.

Robots.txt files are used to prevent or allow search engine robots to access the web pages. The following is format of robots.txt files
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

In which the first line of above ‘User-agent: *’ allows all robots to crawl web pages, while second line ' Disallow: /’tells robots that they should not visit any page on the website.

Robots.txt is text file that is placed on the website in order to inform search engine robots which web pages it should crawl or index and which web pages it should avoid. Robots.txt is not mandatory for all websites but generally search engines follow what it is informed. It is single most important elements of on page optimization and robots.txt is a text file used to give instructions to the search engine crawlers about the caching and indexing of a webpage, domain, directory or a file of a website. The main purpose of the robot.txt is to tell the search engine that which pages to access and which should not. Your Robots.txt file instructs "spider" and "robots" programs not to search pages on your site which you designate using a “disallow” command.

Before a search engine crawls your site, it will look at your robots.txt file as instructions on where they are allowed to crawl (visit) and index (save) on the search engine results. Robots.txt files are useful: If you want search engines to ignore any duplicate pages on your website.

The following is format of robots.txt files
User-agent: *
Disallow: /

where ‘User-agent: *’ allows all robots to crawl web pages, while second line ' Disallow: /’tells robots that they should not visit any page on the website.

Robots.txt is a most important factor and it is a text file located in the site’s root directory that specifies for search engines’ crawlers and spiders what website pages and files you want or don’t want them to visit. Blow this is the format:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

“User-agent” allows all robots to crawl web pages
“Disallow” tell robots that they should not visit any page on the website. https://www.altastreet.com/
