It sounds like the heat melted the surface. If it is solid wood, you will have to sand the top Until everything looks the same then refinish it with something like polyurethane. It sounds like it may have been stained so you will have to re-stain it to restore the color before applying the polyurethane.
You must be absolutely sure that the wood is solid. If the top is covered with a veneer surface, and you sand through that thin surface, you can't fix that.
