If you are going for the SEO of your website then you have to do it in steps in which is first step is On-page optimization and second is Off-page optimization. In On-page optimization you have to modify the hard code of the website according to the major search engines which includes Meta tag optimization, Content optimization, Internal linking of website, Navigation of the website.
While Off-page covers the field of Link Building and content part for the link building.
SO if you are going for this then you should go for the quality backlinks because Google hates the bad links and duplicate content.
