How to find distance between midpoints of a chord and arc, for calculus involving trigonometry?

A straight piece of track 2000 feet long is held fixed at both ends. If, during the day, it expands lengthwise one foot and bows in a circular arc, how far off line will it be at the midpoint?

Please give thorough explanation to all or part of this problem.

If by "circular arc" you mean a perfect circle, the midpoint would be off line half the length.
