Can one connect a car to an ordinary wall socket and start it?

I need to fix a car but dont have a battery. Can one connect where the battery should be to a lead and plug it into wall socket and start the car? Yes/no, and please elaborate.

Absolutely not. The car's battery system is direct current (DC) and the wall socket is alternating current (AC). You would need a device called a 'rectifier' that changes AC to DC at a sufficient amperage to crank the engine. Battery chargers are rectifiers and some of the larger ones produce enough power to start a car.
