Do you regain your memory after a coma?

My friend got in a car accident about 3 months ago. He was in a coma for about 2 and a half months. When he woke up he didn't know who I was or who his parents were. But he could still talk and knew how to write and stuff like that. Last week he said that he was starting to remember people and me too. Is it possible for him to regain his memory of the people he use to know? And if so how long would it take to get his whole memory back? /:

It is surely possible. It all depends on what part of his memory was damaged and to what extent. What you describe are very optimistic signs.
