My e-mail client won't let me delete messages. what can I do to fix it?

I am using a WorldClient e-mail address for my work. A particular account I am monitoring receive hundreds of e-mails a day. Yesterday, the client began to not let me delete any e-mails. I have tried dragging to the trash, opening the item and then hitting the delete button, selecting the e-mail, and also I have tried the "move to folder" option. I suspected the trash was full, but the e-mail client will not let me empty the trash either. If I cannot delete the e-mails, this account will have 20 pages of e-mails by the time the person whose account I'm monitoring returns. Does this ring a bell for anyone? What can I do to correct this?
