Hard disk drive partition

my iap is Toshiba Satellite c600 Laptop 500gb hdd ,2gb.ram ddr3 I installed win 7 ultimate 32bit using hdd as a primary partition without partitioning. after finish my installation I used disk management to make partitions when I shrink the volume it allows to shrink 240gb why it took big volume for c-drive ?

If you have a 500 gig hard drive with two partitions, one at 240 gigs, that means the other is 260 gigs. That doesn't sound like one partition's that much larger than the other.
