The 1967 President's Commission on Law Enforcement estimated that organized crime's income was double all other criminal behavior in the US. They were active in extortion, illegal drugs, bribery of police and government officials among many illegal activities. I doubt anybody willing to admit it has accurate records on which activities were the best money makers.

In 1970, Congress passed the RICO Act aimed at the kingpins and lessened the effect of organized crime.
