Basically it's called plastic surgery because of the Greek word plastikos which means to mold or shape.

In cosmetic surgery they don't use plastic but it is occasionally used in reconstructive surgery. I once worked with a guy who's face was half plastic including one eye and one ear. He dealt with the handicap very well and led a very productive life. In reconstructive surgery that's sometimes the only option available.

I really do not think that the plastic surgery comprises of plastic, basically the reason why it is called plastic surgery is that it mold or enhances that part of the body which are suppose to be compare with the plastic or are flexible as plastic.

Plastic surgery is a special type of surgery that can involve both a person's appearance and ability to function. Plastic surgeons strive to improve patients' appearance and self-image through both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures. Reconstructive procedures correct defects on the face or body. Plastic Surgery is broad surgical specialty that requires a minimum 5 year residency after completing medical school. The word Plastic, in plastic surgery comes from the word "plastikos" which is greek for "to mould" and it got this name because in general plastic surgery involves manipulating and moving tissue around to suit a specific purpose.

It comes from the Greek word “plastikos”, which means “to mold,” a reference to how both cosmetic and reconstructive surgery involve reshaping the body. It has nothing to do with the material “plastic,” other than its name too comes from the same Greek root.
