The President and the Congress are elected and they do their jobs based on what they think the voters want. If you don't think they're, "upholding to it's democratic ideals," you're always less than four years from a solution.
There will always be a politician available to fill a group of voters demands. The ones that make it into office are the ones that fill the most demands. That's democracy. Remember the Pogo cartoon where he comes back from over the hill and says, "I have met the enemy and it is us?" I think Pogo was right.
