8y-3=6y+17 (need to get all the y's on one side to solve for y)
8y-3-6y=6y+17-6y (subtract 6y from both sides)
2y-3=17
2y-3+3=17+3 (add 3 to both sides to get the y's alone)
2y=20
2y / 2 =20 / 2 (divide both sides by 2)
y=10 (voila!)

TEST ANSWER TO DOUBLE CHECK
8x10-3=77
6x10+17=77

YES, the left and right sides of the equation equal each other, so for sure y=10.
