What is the Teaching of Ahimsa?

How does the teaching of Ahimsa influence the daily lives of Lay Jain? (I'm speaking in regards to the religion Jainism.)
I'll take any answer I can get ;-) Oh and sorry bout the religious question; just need this answer for my work, thank you :-)
