I had acne from middle school until just a short while ago. I tried EVERYTHING I could get my hands on, and spent way to much on dermatologists, spa treatments, microdermabrasion, prescriptions, and expensive "cures." I nearly gave up.

For some reason, I went to Walgreens and got old fashioned, store-brand benzoyl peroxide and started slathering it in heavy, heavy amounts all over my face twice a day. I used a gentle cleanser, tons of a gentle moisturizer, and lots of sunscreen. I was clear in about about a week or so.

Now I just use it every few nights to keep my face clear.... and I'm figuring out what to do about the scars besides slather makeup over them.

I did something very similar to what this professional makeup artists/esthetician suggested:

I've been through 5 rounds of Fraxel laser skin resurfacing and it has really gotten rid of I'd say 95% of my scars. I need to go back in for another round or two to have that "photoshopped" appearance in real life. Its costly and hurts like a biatch, but its been SOOOOOOOOO worth it in my opinion to get rid of the freakin acne scars that caused so much damage to my self confidence!!!!!
The CO2 fraxel is the most painful (re:pair) but it gets results the quickest. I had 4 founds of fraxel re:store and the last time he did fraxel re:pair with the CO2.
THANKS!
I suffered from acne from age 16-23. I tried quite literally everything (I had thought) to get rid of it... Went to 3 different dermatologists until I finally found the one who helped. He put me on an antibiotic called minocycline (which I am still on, been on it for almost 6 months now) and recommended that I wash my face with Hibiclens Antiseptic Wash. I also use the extra strength proactiv system (I put the hibiclens on, let it set for a minute, then massage the proactiv renewing cleanser over it with a clarisonic face brush). For dryness which will probably occur from the proactiv I recommend using CeraVe moisturizing lotion.

Safest foundation to use? I've been using Estee Lauder Double Wear with no problems at all, and EVERYTHING breaks me out.

I'd recommend getting it under control before it leaves scars on her face like my acne situation did. I'm having to get Fraxel laser skin resurfacing to make my skin look even again the pitting was so bad. :( I've been through 5 rounds and my skin is almost perfect again.

Have her follow these steps:

1
Resist the urge to attack when these plugged sebaceous glands pop up. In other words, don't pop your pimples, this can cause infections and even scarring.

2
Keep in mind that a combination of hormonal activity, a buildup of bacteria and the shedding of dead skin cells causes pimples. Do what you can to prevent a breakout by establishing a skin-care routine appropriate for your skin type.

3
Have patience. It could take up to one month for a blemish to disappear completely. The less you poke at it, the better.

4
Buy an antibacterial, oil-free concealer that can blend the redness of the pimple into your own skin color. Green shades tend to offset redness the best. (This might not be an option for those who don't wear makeup.)

5
Try a facial mud mask. This may shrink a pimple.

6
Realize that despite the happy teens in the commercials, "zit zapping" solutions, medications you apply directly to pimples, don't do much more than dry out the top layer of skin covering the pimples. These medications don't provide a long-term cure.

7
If you are going to break the rules by "extracting the blemish," aesthetician-speak for popping your pimple, wash your hands, then lightly squeeze the top of the pimple with a tissue or cotton swab. Clean the area thoroughly when you're done. If nothing happens, leave the pimple alone until it's ready to pop.

8
Apply a benzol peroxide acne medication to the pimple and avoid applying medication to the surrounding area.
