Playing with a group in an organized league not only improves your individual skills at moving and controlling the ball, it teaches you to work effectively in a group the way you will likely be required to do later in life. It helps you learn to take direction from higher authorities but also to develop leadership skills of your own. The common bond of "fighting the battle" together can build friendships that last a lifetime. It will make you better at the sport and better equipped to deal with your later life. I highly recommend it.
