There are many different expectations and just as many definitions of "giving them their best." The real question is whether her expectations are reasonable and the guy's evaluation of his performance is accurate.
My suggestion is to sit down and have a conversation (not an argument) with her about it. Listen carefully and honestly to what she says. If you think she has some legitimate complaints, try to correct them. If they are things you are unable to change, add fair and reasonable to the list of qualities you want in the next one.
