In order to increase your Google page rank, you need to understand a concept called Search Engine Optimization (SEO for short), employ those strategies and techniques well, and be patient. It can take some time to see results.
It gets super technical, but here's a good beginner's guide:

I would disagree with the statement on that web site that, "Search engines are always working towards improving their technology to crawl the web more deeply and return increasingly relevant results to users." In my view, search engines are always working towards maximizing their advertising revenue. If the user happens to find what he/she's looking for, it's because there's some money to be made near that subject by someone willing to pay for the hits. Otherwise the article gets buried under 5,000 sites trying to sell the cheapest model for pennies difference in the price.
I agree. That's why I actually think Google is becoming less and less useful for me personally... But I don't think anyone can deny that if you want to be on the first serp, you need to at least try to understand the rules they play by.
Oh, Rob, do you know of a better beginner's guide? This is a topic I'm loath to explain, so I'm always looking for something useful for people who ask me...
I don't think there's anything wrong with the information on that site at all. It's very difficult to explain highly technical matierial in simple terms. The fact is that people who want to work in that arena, have to learn what they're dealing with. I just thought their comment on search engine's motives was a bit overdone.
Google has done a good job up to now at masking the money side with good quality free services but the latest change is way too much. Most people don't mind reading the ads along the highway but when the billboard blocks the road, they'll take another route. It's a golden opprotunity for their competitors though.
