Pick a controversial subject you know something about or that you want to learn about; choose a side on the issue and write a fact based argument for that position. There are many issues in the news with a lot of information like global warming, immigration, the federal deficit, same-sex marriage, government secrets vs. the public's right to know or nuclear safety for a few examples. The list is almost limitless.

Persuasion essays are like argument essays, but they can be little kinder and gentler. Argument essays require that you discuss and attack an alternate view, while persuasion essays can be less "in your face." Some are more like attempts to convince the reader that you have a believable argument. For example a persuasive essay topic can be "We should teach etiquette in schools"
