I'm not an attorney. I can't give legal advice.

Immigration issues are so complicated; best to ASK AN ATTORNEY... a good one, not a sub-par one who only wants to make money off of immigrants. Find one who will actually advocate for you.

If cost is an issue, call your local bar association, tell them your concern, and ask them to point you towards free or reduced cost legal services. Most bar associations can set you up with member attorneys who will meet for one hour for $25 if the appointment is made through the bar association.

I found this online at Cornell's Law School:

United States Code: Title 8, Section 1227. Deportable aliens

Aggravated felony. Any alien who is convicted of an aggravated felony at any time after admission is deportable.

Not only in the U.S. but in all countries, legal aliens are in a foriegn country as a guest. Deportation is one of the options available to a judge when an alien is convicted of a felony. People that enter a country illegally can be (but not always are) deported for any reason when they are detected.

The law is rather clear, the confusion in the U.S. is from selective enforcement policies and politics.
