Money is an artificial symbol of value that allows people to exchange things without using a barter sysyem. If there was no monetary system, you would have to find something you own of equal value to exchange for everything you buy. If you worked for someone else, how would they pay you?
Money is also the yardstick of success in some societies. A person with millions is arguably considered more successful than a poor person. Money causes greed and in some cases is truly the "root of all evil" but the world would be a much more complicated place to live without money.
