Does a retired military man that joined the army in 1945 automatically receive life insurance?

I need to know whether my grandpa has life insurance thru the military...he retired from the army and some of the family is saying that he did not have a life insurance policy thru the army at his passing and we think that they are trying to keep the money from it....i thought every service member that retired from the military automatically had a life insurance policy?

Call the Veteran's Administration Insurance Center toll-free at 1-800-669-8477 between 8:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Eastern Time and ask them. There was a fire years ago in a St. Louis records center that destroyed a lot of their information so when calling, have as many of his military records as you can locate available.
