How did britain's role in the middle east help set the stage for the arab-israeli conflict?

Also, Do you think that there is a solution to the current Arab-Israeli situation, or is it likely to continue indefinitely? Whatever information anyone can give would be greatly appreciated, please help ASAP, god bless!
Please help, I'm not looking for a long summary or anything just a short response to both questions.

In 1917 British Foreign Minister Balfour was given the task of drawing borders for the Arab countries that had been under the Ottoman Empire. He did the transfer for all of them except Palestine. Balfour considered the jews in Europe to be a problem so he reserved the land in Palestine for a future jewish homeland instead of following through on the planned distribution.

When the United Nations was formed in 1947, it attempted to resolve the problem by dividing the country in half but before it was formalized fighting broke out and over the next decade the Israelis expanded their share to around 75% via the military solution.

In my opinion the fighting will continue until an equitable settlement of the Palestinian land issue and the two definitions of what would be "equitable" are currently miles apart.

Thanks again for helping me out as much as you could, I really appreciate it once again. :)
A good source of information is the UN web site. Look for the history of the Palestinian issue.
