Key issues behind Russia's resurgence?

In the past few years, Russia has shown clear signs of taking a more active and aggressive role in international affairs. Can anyone explain to me some of the key issues behind Russia's resurgence? And Do you think that Russia will begin to play a leadership role in European and international affairs? Pls help with any info, thanks very much!!!!!!

Russia has taken an active role in international affairs at least back to WWII. There was a period when the leadership was more concerned with internal affairs resulting from the transition into the post communist period. With that behind them you can expect a more involved and assertive foreign policy in the coming years.

One key foreign policy issue is their dealings with Iran in an attempt to exchange nuclear electric power technology through their Bushehr Nuclear plant and their offer to take Iranian nuclear materials. They have also opposed the proposal to build a missile defense system to protect western Europe from missiles under development in Iran. Russian veto power in the United Nations solidifies their leadership position in both European and International affairs..
