He supported tarriffs on nations that taxed U.S. imports into their country.

In a time when there was a great debate over protecting US jobs and businesses by maintaining high import taxes, Harrison initiated reciprocity which based the US import tax rates on whether the importing nation charged a tarrif on goods the US exported to them.
