My dog has started to pee in our beds

Our rescue dog (approx age 1-2yr old) has started to become destructive with toys and now is urinating throughout the house nad on the beds. What can we do to stop this behavior?

Dogs locate an acceptable place by smell. You have to get the smell of their urine out of the house and put them outside often.

It's normal for a dog to want to chew. You have to provide them with things that are acceptable to destroy, put them in their special location and scold them for using anything else. Most breeds learn the routine pretty fast.

If the dog is left alone for long periods of time both of the behaviors above become impossible to control.

Dogs also become distructive when they are bored or are not getting enough exercise. Play with your dog or take him/her for a walk every day.

Urinating could be a result of many things. Male dogs urinate to mark their territory. Your dog may be urinating in key locations, such as the beds, for this reason.

If no one is home to walk the dog when he/she needs to urinate then he/she may have no choice but to urinate in the house.

Some dogs destroy things and urinate when they are anxious or nervous. A rescue dog is not unlikely to experience anxiety when it's family is away. Dogs do feel abandonment. Furthermore, I wonder does the dog sleep in the bed with you? Because this is generally discouraged. It can lead to over dependence which may be contributing to any anxiety your dog is feeling.

Sometimes uncontrolled bladder issues are a result of kidney problems. Dogs tend not to defecate or urinate where they eat or sleep so accidents in these sorts of places are suspicious.

Consult with your vet to rule out the last two concerns and establish a regular routine of walks and play to encourage peeing outdoors and discourage destructive behaviors.
