If your system works like most, it has a Local Area network that all of the computers in the school connect to. When the computer you're using requests a site, it links to a proxy server on the other end that compares the site you've requested to a list of acceptable web sites. If the requested site isn't on the list, you're blocked.

Under that type system, there's nothing you can change on the machine you're using to unblock Facebook. You should also be aware that some such systems keep records of attempts to defeat the blocks.

Go onto Google, and type in "google proxies". go to any link that says "new proxies daily" or "fresh proxies". It will give you a list of browsers that have the programs to go through the schools security system. I am a pro at hacking through the school network. Hope it helps.

If the school's computers are connected to their own proxy server that screens out all but pre-approved sites, how will that work?

It's just an idea, but on our school computers, where we have the security program iPrism and St. Bernard running at all times, we have to use a username that isn't restricted to student apps, programs, and websites, where you would be able to free roam on Google, and click any sites that would pop up that don't have any keywords that apply to being blocked, such as Game, Pornography, or Social Networking. Once you are onto the free proxy, however, the proxy has no internet security, so you can browse freely, and it will not save browsing history, cache, or cookies.
No matter how many proxy websites you use the teachers will always find away to block them again.
