How long can you leave stitches in your back?

My gradma lives in Key West and had sun cancer in her back and got it out and sowed up about a week ago. She is visiting me, but she might have to leave because she doesnt want to leave them in. She only has 20 stitches...and since its Thanksgiving week, no doctors are opened and her opointment is tomarow. How much longer can she lleave them in? Or can I take them out myself?

There are different materials used for stitching and different kinds of wounds caused by surgery. Call the doctor's office that put the stitches in and ask that question to make sure you're solving a problem, not creating one.

It really depends on the kind of stitches. I had surgery once and had stitches that would dissolve as the area I had surgery on would heal. Normally after about ten days the wound should have healed enough to have the stitches in. but like rob said call the doctor who put them in to make sure that no more serious harm will happen.
