Why are ghosts really scary to many people?

Why are ghosts really scary to many people? Is it because they creep in the dark, or what??

Not all ghosts are scary. Remember Casper? :-)

People have always suspected things they don't understand of being evil. Volcanos were the result of angry gods. There were many superstitions about electricity before science explained it. Ghosts remain in that category. When something unexplained happens in a house or a graveyard, it's a ghost. In the sky it's a UFO. In the woods, it's Bigfoot.

If we don't understand what it is, it's scary.
