Well when you scan a document you're basically taking a picture of it, so you're getting an image, not text. You can paste the scanned image (as an image) into a Word document, but that won't do you much good. There's special software you can get, it's called OCR (Optical Caracter Recognition) software, and it basically looks for the shapes of letters and recreates it as text. With this program you will then be able to insert the text into Word.
