The thermosphere is near the top of our atmosphere. It's where the planet reacts to solar flares and sun spots.

The ionosphere is within the thermosphere, but not the same thing. It's near the top of the thermosphere and is the area of the thermosphere where ultra violet radiation causes ionization (an electrical charge). It is a barrier that reflects low frequency radio waves, the result of the belt of charged particles.
