How do I reset the spring in a window shade?

The spring should be fully relaxed when the shade is completely wound and at the top. It should gain tension on the spring as the shade is pulled down.

Wrap the shade around the spindle, take the end cap off, set the spring in the slot then put the end cap back on. If it doesn't gain tension on the spring as it's pulled down, there's something broken inside.
